Principal’s Message

School is up and running, students now fill the halls and classrooms, cafeteria, library and gym, playground and pool.  The school comes alive; its spirit is renewed at the beginning of each semester, filled with hope, wonder, curiosity and joy.  Welcome to Brent Subic and school year 2010-2011!

I would like to remind us all that student safety is our primary concern, so please drive slowly when you are near and on campus.  In order for our car drop-off and pick-up areas to be safe and efficient please pull up as far as you can in order to make room for cars and buses behind.  The lower school now has a separate carpool area leading directly to the lower school building. Please make use of it.

As the school year gets underway, I would like to let you know what the faculty has been working on and will continue to work on throughout the year.  For our orientation, Mr. Robbins, our Headmaster, designed an all-Brent faculty meeting in Manila.  We spent two days with our Baguio and Manila counterparts in work sessions targeted on our assessment practices.  The meetings provided wonderful opportunities to share assessments and to collaborate with our teaching partners.  Research on new assessment practices was presented, challenging us to continue to look for ways to improve our practice.

On August 7-8, 17 Brent Subic faculty members travelled to Manila to attend an assessment conference, hosted by Brent Manila and also attended by Brent Baguio teachers.  There were over 70 of us there.  Bill and Ochan Powell, renowned professional development presenters in South-East Asia, presented assessment research, best practices and suggestions for our continued efforts.

As you are aware, Thursday mornings are “late starts” – school starts at 9:00am - at all three Brent Schools.  We will use this time to further our work on assessment.  We will continue to collaborate with our partners in Manila and Baguio.  We will work amongst the Subic faculty to address issues of alignment, balance and organization of our assessments across grade levels, departments and divisions.

We are excited to work with your child!  We are also excited to grow professionally!

The Measures of Academic Performance test (MAP) will be given to all grade 3-10 students during the weeks of August 31-September 17.  The tests will provide us with an accurate picture of our student strengths and areas of need.  Parents will receive a copy of the scores soon after the tests are completed.  We would like to extend an invitation to all parents and guardians to come to an informative meeting about MAP tests on August 26 at 3:15

Brent Subic an International Baccalaureate World School

Congratulations!!!

The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) recently recognized Brent International School Subic as a Diploma school.  We will now offer the IB Diploma to students entering grade 11.  It is a two-year program and upon completion of the rigorous academic and social awareness course work, students will earn an IB Diploma as well as the Brent Diploma.  These two diplomas will open doors for our students into colleges and universities around the world.  More importantly, we feel, along with the IBO, that the student will be prepared to live a life with a global perspective, ready to face any challenge head on, committed to serving others and staying true to one’s moral compass.

We would like to thank all of the faculty members who spent a great portion of their time last school year to prepare Subic to be a candidate school – and now an official IB Diploma school.  Special thanks are due to Mr. Oviatt, who will be Subic’s first IB Coordinator!

The faculty and students are ready to embark on this exciting challenge.

Once again, a hearty congratulations to Brent Subic!
