National Honor Society<\/h1><\/span>

What is the National Honor Society?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

The National Honor Society (NHS) is an international student organization that elevates a school\u2019s commitment to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These four pillars have been associated with membership in the organization since its inception in 1921 by the <\/span>National Association of Secondary School Principals<\/span><\/i> in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service. NHS members are involved in school activities and fundraisers that foster school spirit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Eligible students in grade 10 – 12 will receive an invitation to apply to the NHS for this school year. Applications will then be reviewed by the faculty council with successful members announced during the NHS Tapping in Chapel. An Induction Ceremony for new NHS members will be held in the MPH on October 1, 2025.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Criteria for Membership 2026 – 2027<\/b><\/p>\n

Brent International School Subic Chapter of the National Honor Society <\/b><\/p>\n

1. Scholarship <\/b><\/p>\n

Students must achieve a 3.3 weighted cumulative GPA average. <\/p>\n

2. Leadership <\/b><\/p>\n

Students must demonstrate leadership. The student who exercises <\/p>\n

leadership: <\/p>\n

* Is a positive role model and inspires the student body <\/p>\n

* Demonstrates initiative in the classroom, at work, in school or the community <\/p>\n

* Inspires others to get involved and promotes school activities <\/p>\n

* Communicates with others effectively <\/p>\n

* Provides vision and contributes ideas to improve the school and the community <\/p>\n

* Is resourceful in proposing solutions to problems. <\/p>\n

* Is organized and proactive <\/p>\n

* Is able to delegate responsibilities <\/p>\n

* Successfully holds offices or positions of responsibility in school or community <\/p>\n

* Conducts business efficiently and effectively <\/p>\n

3. Service <\/b><\/p>\n

Students must be committed to community service. The student who serves: <\/p>\n

* Provides service for the good of others and does not directly benefit themselves<\/p>\n

* Is not compensated for their service financially, with course credit or<\/p>\n

otherwise<\/p>\n

* Organizes and participates in service activities both inside and outside of school <\/p>\n

* Is dependable, well organized, cooperative, and always dedicated to help when volunteering <\/p>\n

* Volunteers willingly and without being asked <\/p>\n

* Represents the community through good conduct and maturity <\/p>\n

4. Character <\/b><\/p>\n

Students must demonstrate strong character. The student of character: <\/p>\n

* Shows respect for peers, teachers, school staff and property at all times <\/p>\n

* Accepts criticism willingly and accepts recommendations graciously<\/p>\n

* Takes responsibility for their actions <\/p>\n

* Upholds principles of morality and ethics <\/p>\n

* Demonstrates the highest standards of honesty, integrity, and reliability <\/p>\n

* Demonstrates self-discipline and reliability in both academic and extracurricular settings <\/p>\n

SELECTION PROCESS GUIDELINES<\/b><\/p>\n

I. To be eligible to apply for membership, a candidate must:<\/p>\n

\ta. Have spent at least one year at Brent.<\/p>\n

\ta. Be a member of the 10th, 11th or 12th grade class.<\/p>\n

\tb. Have a cumulative GPA of 3.3.<\/p>\n

c. Pass the evaluation of the Faculty Council on service, leadership and character through deliberations and a majority vote by the council members. <\/p>\n

II. A 5-member Faculty Council who will have the following responsibilities selects honorees:<\/p>\n

Evaluates candidates\u2019 information packet submitted to the Council.<\/p>\n

Collects, gathers data from the following sources:<\/p>\n

At least 3 teachers (could be homeroom, subject teachers, former teachers)<\/p>\n

Administrators: Principal and Activities Director<\/p>\n

Community or activities\u2019 supervisor (coach, church leaders, etc)<\/p>\n

Participates in the deliberations<\/p>\n

Recommends\/nominates candidate for acceptance <\/p>\n

III. A final list is submitted to the Principal for approval. <\/p>\n

IV. Once selected by the faculty council and approved by the principal, successful candidates will be recognized during the Tapping Ceremony. <\/p>\n

V. A letter of acceptance and invitation to attend the induction ceremony is sent to the honorees and their parents after the Tapping Ceremony. <\/p>\n

VI. Honorees are then expected to uphold ideals for which they were selected and continue on in the accomplishments. <\/p>\n

VII. Honorees must maintain a GPA of at least 3.3 to remain a member of the Society until graduation. Failure to do so will call for honorees dismissal from the society. <\/p>\n<\/div>
