The Wiz

As we reflect on this year, two words seem to fit the description of this school most aptly – positive change.  We began the year in August with a student body population of 374; we end the year with 403 students.

As you walk around the campus today, you notice a new lower school building with 12 classrooms being built; the walkways are being covered further, and an atrium is being completed to facilitate communication and provide covered open areas.

The faculty continues to look for ways to improve its ability to teach students.  Almost half of the faculty completed English as a Second Language course, gaining understandings of how to teach students who are mastering English.
Brent Subic continues to work towards aligning its curriculum and course offerings with the campuses in Baguio and Manila.  The International Baccalaureate will be offered for the first time here for the school year 2009/2010.  Plans are well underway to achieve this milestone.  Students will gain the ability to be recognized as an IB diploma recipient.

Student activities and clubs achieved terrific results this year.  Our participation in the International Schools Activities Conference resulted in the school’s first ever overall championship.  Through student participation in clubs and activities, community outreach projects affected a tremendous number of charitable organizations and people’s lives.  All of the above are positive changes for Brent Subic.

As we continue to change positively, we understand that with change growing pains do develop.  We have had to overcome some of those this year and we will face others in the years ahead.  In order to face these, learn and improve from them, we need to continue to work as a team.  Communication between all parties is essential for Brent Subic’s positive change to continue.

The results from the standardized testing completed in February arrived.  Your children’s results will be included in the final report card.  Generally, the results show that Brent Subic students are good math students and that attention is needed in English reading, comprehension and vocabulary.  The results are understandable due to our large ESL population.  They do help to highlight the recommendation that all students should be reading (with a dictionary at hand), writing and speaking English this summer.

The final word for school year 2007/2008 goes out to our students.  The faculty at Brent Subic is so proud of the student body.  We are amazed by student’s dedication, perseverance and tremendous talents.  Our students are polite and respectful to the faculty and staff and we thank you for those caring traits.  To our especially talented senior class, thank you, best of luck in following your dreams, remember us, stay in touch, and may God bless you.

To our returning students…enjoy your summer; we will see you in August!
